Camellia sasanqua 'Setsugekka'
Sasanqua Camellia
Description:
Popular evergreen camellia with glossy, dark green foliage and an upright, bushy growth habit. It produces an abundance of large, pure white semi-double flowers with beautifully ruffled and wavy petals, often displaying prominent golden-yellow stamens at the centre. The lightly fragrant flowers appear from early autumn through to early winter, providing an attractive seasonal display when many other plants are not flowering. Its dense growth habit and reliable flowering make it an excellent choice for hedging, screening, espalier, or as a feature plant.
Height:
2.5–3m
Width:
1.5–2m
Position:
Full sun to part shade. Performs well in a sheltered position with good airflow. Sasanqua camellias are more sun-tolerant than many other camellia types, but protection from harsh afternoon sun and strong winds is beneficial.
Soil:
Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil with good organic matter. Slightly acidic soil is ideal. Avoid heavy, poorly drained soils, particularly where water can remain around the roots.
Uses:
- Formal and informal hedges
- Screening and privacy planting
- Espalier
- Feature or specimen planting
- Mixed shrub borders
- Cottage and white gardens
- Containers when young
Care Tips:
- Water regularly during establishment; once established, water during prolonged dry periods, particularly through summer
- Apply a suitable slow-release fertiliser for camellias and acid-loving plants in spring after flowering
- Mulch around the root zone to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk
- Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense, bushy growth
- For hedging, trim lightly and regularly rather than undertaking heavy pruning
- Avoid disturbing the shallow root system when cultivating around the plant
- Provide good drainage, particularly through winter
- Hardy once established and tolerant of a range of New Zealand growing conditions
