How Weka Nurseries Started
Since the young age of 11 Rod has always had a keen interest in propagating and growing plants. It could be said it is in his DNA, with his grandfather growing passion fruit, tomatoes and Impatiens for many years, and his father has spent more than 50 years, mostly in indoor plant production.
Rod trained in production horticulture when he left school and worked originally in a couple of large established nurseries in south Auckland before completing further training in landscape design and then starting his own landscape company in 1998 which today is a successful company with a good reputation employing over 50 people. While Landscape construction is the core business Rod has always had a few lines of trees and shrubs.

Rod and Jan
In recent years Rod’s wife Jan who works in the landscape business also developed quite a passion for the nursery side of the business and put a bit more of a focus on this area. Fueled partly by the shortage of quality trees and shrubs in recent years and a desire to have a good grade of plants to plant in their landscape projects. Rod and Jan purchased a property on the Bombay hills in 2017.
Rod and Jan’s goal is to become known for the quality shrubs they produce and to be the go-to nursery for anyone wanting hardy low maintenance shrubs.
Rod also has years of practical landscape experience and can offer good practical advice and a solution to your needs.

Quality is important and they take a lot of pride in the product they produce. This starts from the environment in which they grow, the selection of propagation materials and growing on lines they purchase, and the potting mix in which they choose to grow their product in.
