Muehlenbeckia astonii
Shrubby tororaro
Description:
Distinctive and hardy New Zealand native shrub with a dense tangle of wiry, reddish-brown branches and small, rounded green leaves that are deciduous in colder regions. Its intricate, twiggy form gives it an attractive texture and fine structure, especially when the leaves drop in winter. Tiny greenish-white flowers appear in summer, followed by small, translucent white fruits that attract birds. It is an excellent choice for dry, exposed or coastal gardens.

· Water well while establishing, then only occasionally during dry periods
· Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds
· Very hardy to frost, wind, and salt spray
· Can be trimmed back hard if it becomes too open or woody, it will reshoot from the base
