Pyrus salicifolia 'Pendula'
Weeping Silver Pear / Willow-leaved Pear
Description:
Elegant deciduous ornamental tree with a graceful weeping habit and striking silvery-grey foliage. The narrow, willow-like leaves create a soft, flowing appearance, providing beautiful texture and movement in the garden. In spring, it produces clusters of small white flowers before the foliage fully develops. Its attractive silver foliage and cascading form make it an excellent feature tree for modern, formal, and cottage-style landscapes.
Height:
4–6m
Width:
3–5m
Position:
Full sun. Performs best in an open position with good airflow and is tolerant of wind and exposed sites once established.
Soil:
Adaptable to a range of well-drained soils, including loam, sandy, and clay soils. Prefers fertile soil but will tolerate poorer conditions provided drainage is adequate.
Uses:
- Feature or specimen tree
- Silver foliage contrast planting
- Cottage, formal, and contemporary gardens
- Large lawn areas or open spaces
- Screening and structural planting
- Suitable for coastal and exposed gardens
Care Tips:
- Water regularly while establishing; once established it is moderately drought tolerant
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth
- Prune in winter if required to maintain shape and remove crossing or damaged branches
- Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk
- Generally hardy in New Zealand conditions, tolerating frost, wind, and coastal exposure
- Ensure good drainage, especially in heavier soils
