Description:
Striking New Zealand native tree with a graceful, spreading habit and attractive feathery foliage. It features larger leaflets than Sophora microphylla, creating a softer, lush appearance. From late winter through spring, it produces clusters of bright yellow, pea-shaped flowers that are highly attractive to tūī, bellbirds, and other nectar-feeding native birds. A long-lived and hardy tree, it is valued as a feature plant for its seasonal flowering display and contribution to native wildlife gardens.

Position:
Full sun to part shade. Performs best in an open position with plenty of light for strong growth and flowering. Tolerates wind once established.
Soil:
Adaptable to a range of well-drained soils, including sandy, loamy, and coastal soils. Prefers fertile soils but tolerates poorer conditions once established. Avoid prolonged waterlogged areas.

Care Tips:
- Water regularly while establishing; once mature it is drought tolerant
- Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk
- Apply a native plant fertiliser in spring if required
- Prune lightly when young to encourage a strong structure and remove damaged branches
- Protect young plants from severe frost and animal browsing
- Hardy throughout much of New Zealand, tolerating wind and coastal conditions once established
