Griselinia lucida
Shining Broadleaf, Akapuka or Puka
Description:
Hardy New Zealand native evergreen shrub or small tree with large, glossy, leathery green leaves and a naturally dense, upright growth habit. Griselinia lucida is well suited to coastal and exposed gardens, with excellent tolerance of wind and salt spray. Its attractive foliage provides year-round structure and makes it a popular choice for screening, hedging, and native landscapes. Small greenish-yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by dark purple berries on female plants when pollinated.
Height:
3–8m
Width:
2–5m, depending on growing conditions and pruning
Position:
Full sun to part shade. Thrives in coastal conditions and tolerates wind, salt spray, and exposed sites. Performs well in sheltered inland gardens also.
Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained soil but adapts to a range of soil types, including sandy and coastal soils. Performs best with regular moisture, especially in dry conditions.
Uses:
- Hedges and privacy screens
- Coastal shelter planting
- Windbreaks and exposed sites
- Native and coastal gardens
- Feature or specimen plant
- Urban landscapes
Care Tips:
- Water regularly during establishment; provide additional watering during prolonged dry periods
- Prune to maintain shape and encourage a dense, bushy habit; responds well to trimming
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth
- Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk
- Hardy and well suited to New Zealand conditions, particularly coastal areas where wind and salt tolerance are important
