Description:
Distinctive and hardy New Zealand native shrub with a dense network of wiry, zigzagging reddish-brown branches and small, rounded green leaves that may be partially deciduous in colder regions. Its intricate branching creates outstanding year-round texture and architectural interest, particularly during winter when the foliage is sparse. Tiny greenish-white flowers appear in summer, followed by small white to translucent berries that attract native birds. A naturally uncommon and threatened species in the wild, it is an excellent choice for native, coastal, and low-maintenance landscapes.

Position:
Full sun to part shade. Thrives in exposed sites and tolerates strong winds, coastal conditions, and frost.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained soil and adapts to sandy, gravelly, or rocky soils. Tolerates poor, dry soils once established but dislikes prolonged waterlogging.

Care Tips:
- Water regularly during establishment; once established it requires very little supplementary watering
- Prune lightly to maintain shape or more heavily if rejuvenation is required, as it responds well to pruning
- Mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the stem
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring if growing in very poor soils
- Extremely hardy and well suited to New Zealand conditions, tolerating frost, wind, coastal exposure, and extended dry periods once established
