Armeria 'Pacific Giant'
Thrift
Description:
Hardy, evergreen perennial forming neat clumps of fine, grassy green foliage, topped with taller stems carrying bright pink, globe-shaped flowers. Flowering from spring into summer, 'Pacific Giant' provides a strong splash of colour while maintaining an attractive, tidy form throughout the year. Its tolerance of wind, coastal conditions and periods of dry weather makes it a versatile choice for New Zealand gardens, particularly in sunny, free-draining sites.
Height:
30–40cm
Width:
25–35cm
Position:
Full sun. Performs best in an open, sunny position with good airflow. Highly suited to exposed and coastal conditions and tolerant of wind and periods of dry weather once established.
Soil:
Prefers free-draining soil and performs well in sandy, gravelly or lighter soils. Avoid heavy or poorly drained areas, particularly during winter, as excessive moisture can lead to root and crown problems.
Uses:
- Borders and garden edging
- Rockeries and gravel gardens
- Coastal gardens
- Mass planting and garden drifts
- Containers and pots
- Low-maintenance and drought-tolerant planting
Care Tips:
- Water regularly during establishment; once established, it is tolerant of dry conditions and only requires additional watering during prolonged dry periods
- Remove spent flower stems to encourage further flowering and maintain a tidy appearance
- Remove any dead or damaged foliage as required to keep the plant looking neat
- Feed lightly in spring if required; avoid heavy fertilising as Armeria generally performs well in lean soils
- Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering, particularly through winter
- Space plants approximately 25–30cm apart when mass planting to allow room for the clumps to develop
