Camellia transnokoensis
Description:
A graceful evergreen camellia species prized for its masses of small, fragrant white flowers produced from late winter to early spring. The delicate single blooms feature golden-yellow stamens and stand out beautifully against the glossy, dark green foliage. The fragrant flowers provide an early source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators. Naturally compact and densely branched, it makes an excellent choice for hedging, specimen planting, woodland gardens, or containers. Its long flowering season brings welcome colour and fragrance to the garden when little else is in bloom.
Height:
2–3m
Width:
1.5–2.5m
Position:
Part shade to full sun. Performs best with morning sun or filtered light, especially in warmer regions. Shelter from strong winds is beneficial.
Soil:
Prefers fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid alkaline soils and sites prone to prolonged waterlogging. Mulching helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain cool root conditions.
Uses:
- Informal or formal hedging
- Woodland and cottage gardens
- Feature shrub planting
- Containers and courtyards
- Screening and privacy planting
- Espalier and topiary
- Fragrant winter and early spring gardens
Care Tips:
- Keep well-watered during establishment
- Once established, it is reasonably tolerant of short dry periods but performs best with consistent moisture during prolonged dry weather
- Apply a camellia, azalea, or acid-loving plant fertiliser in spring after flowering
- Mulch annually with compost, leaf mould, or bark to conserve moisture and improve soil health
- Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape, encourage bushier growth, or keep hedges tidy
- Remove any dead or damaged branches as required
- Hardy throughout most of New Zealand and tolerant of light to moderate frosts once established; protect young plants from severe frost and drying winds
