Description:
Hardy, evergreen, clump-forming perennial with broad, glossy dark green strap-like leaves and spectacular clusters of bright orange, trumpet-shaped flowers held above the foliage on sturdy stems. Flowering from late winter through spring and into early summer, it provides a welcome splash of colour in shady areas of the garden. Clivia is particularly well suited to dry, sheltered shade beneath trees and is a long-lived, low-maintenance plant that can remain undisturbed for many years. Red, berry-like fruit may develop after flowering if the flower heads are left to set seed.

Position:
Dappled shade to full shade. Performs best beneath trees or in a sheltered shady position. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch and yellow the foliage. Protect from heavy frost, particularly when young.
Soil:
Prefers fertile, humus-rich, free-draining soil. It can tolerate relatively dry conditions once established but does not perform well in consistently wet or poorly drained soil.

Care Tips:
- Water regularly during establishment and through spring and summer during prolonged dry periods; reduce watering during the cooler months
- Avoid overwatering, as Clivia dislikes wet feet and requires good drainage
- Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy foliage and flowering
- Mulch around the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the base
- Remove spent flower stems if you do not want the plant to produce berries
- Leave established clumps undisturbed for best flowering; divide only when clumps become overcrowded or flowering declines
- Divide after flowering, taking care to retain as much of the fleshy root system as possible
- Protect from strong sun and heavy frost, particularly in exposed sites
- Relatively low maintenance once established and well suited to Auckland and other temperate parts of New Zealand.
