Escallonia 'Red Knight'
Description:
Compact, evergreen shrub prized for its glossy green foliage and masses of rich crimson-red, lightly scented flowers from late spring through summer, with flowering often continuing into autumn in mild New Zealand climates. The blooms attract bees and other beneficial pollinators. Its dense, bushy habit and excellent tolerance of wind and coastal conditions make it an ideal choice for hedging, screening, borders, and low-maintenance gardens.
Height:
1.2–1.5m
Width:
1.2–1.5m
Position:
Full sun to part shade. Performs best in full sun for the heaviest flowering. Tolerates coastal exposure and windy sites.
Soil:
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil but adapts to a range of soil types, including light clay, provided drainage is adequate.
Uses:
- Informal or clipped hedging
- Coastal and exposed gardens
- Mixed shrub borders
- Pollinator-friendly gardens
- Screening and low-maintenance landscapes
Care Tips:
- Water regularly during the first growing season until established; once established, it is reasonably drought tolerant
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering
- Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage dense new growth
- Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the base of the stems
- Hardy in most New Zealand climates and highly tolerant of salt-laden winds, making it an excellent choice for coastal gardens
