Description:
A hardy evergreen New Zealand native rush-like sedge with stiff, upright green stems and a distinctive rounded, knobbly flower head. It forms a dense, upright clump and is naturally found in coastal areas, including dunes, banks, estuaries and other damp coastal habitats. The small brown flower heads appear on the ends of the stems, adding year-round texture and interest. Ficinia nodosa is a tough, low-maintenance plant that is particularly well suited to coastal and naturalistic planting.

Position:
Full sun to partial shade. It is particularly well suited to coastal conditions and can tolerate wind and exposed sites. It naturally occurs in coastal banks, dunes, estuaries and damp areas.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained soil. It is adaptable to a range of soil conditions and performs particularly well in sandy or coastal soils. It can tolerate damp conditions but should not be kept permanently waterlogged.

Care Tips:
- Water regularly while establishing, particularly during dry periods.
- Once established, it is a hardy, low-maintenance plant.
- Mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the crown.
- Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser if required.
- Remove old or damaged stems and foliage as necessary to maintain a tidy appearance.
- Divide established clumps when they become overcrowded if required.
- Avoid excessively dry conditions during establishment.
- Its stiff foliage can be sharp, so position away from high-traffic areas where appropriate.
