Gardenia radicans
Creeping Gardenia
Description:
Gardenia radicans is a low-growing, evergreen shrub with glossy, deep green foliage and highly fragrant, creamy-white double flowers in spring and summer. It is a compact, spreading form of the common gardenia, making it ideal as a groundcover, border edging, or for container planting. The flowers are strongly scented, adding a delightful perfume to the garden or patio.
Height:
30–50 cm
Width:
60–120 cm (spreading habit)
Position:
Prefers a warm, sheltered spot. Best in full sun to part shade. Protect from cold winds and frost.
Soil:
Acidic, free-draining soil rich in organic matter. Avoid alkaline or lime soils. Consistent moisture is important but avoid waterlogging.
Uses:
· Fragrant groundcover in garden beds
· Border or edging plant
· Excellent in pots and containers near entrances or outdoor seating areas to enjoy the perfume
· Underplanting in sheltered areas
Care tips:
· Apply an acid-loving plant fertiliser (such as camellia/rhododendron food) in spring and summer.
· Keep soil evenly moist, especially in hot or dry periods. Mulch to conserve soil moisture.
· Lightly trim after flowering to maintain compact shape and encourage bushy growth.
· Cover with frost cloth or place in a sheltered spot in cooler regions.
· Avoid disturbing roots when planting; gardenias resent root disturbance
