Description:
Hardy, fast-growing New Zealand native evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy, bright green leaves and a naturally dense, bushy habit. Its excellent tolerance of wind, salt spray, and coastal conditions makes it one of New Zealand's most popular plants for hedging, screening, and shelter belts. Small yellow-green flowers appear in spring, followed by purple-black berries on female plants when a male plant is present for pollination.

Height:
3–8m (as a tree), 1–3m when maintained as a hedge

Width:
2–5m, depending on pruning and growing conditions

Position:
Full sun to part shade. Thrives in coastal locations and tolerates strong winds and salt-laden air.

Soil:
Prefers well-drained soil but adapts to a wide range of soil types, including sandy, clay, and rocky soils.

Care Tips:

• Water regularly during establishment; once established, it is drought tolerant
• Trim regularly to maintain a dense hedge or prune as required to shape
• Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy new growth
• Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk
• Extremely hardy and well suited to New Zealand conditions, tolerating coastal exposure, wind, and moderate frost once established
