Hebe 'Sutherlandii'
Veronica sutherlandii
Description:
Compact, evergreen New Zealand native shrub with attractive grey-green foliage and a dense, spreading growth habit. Small white flowers appear from spring through summer, sometimes extending into autumn, attracting bees and other beneficial pollinators. Its tidy form and hardy nature make it an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardens, borders, rockeries, and mass planting.
Height:
50–60cm
Width:
80–100cm
Position:
Full sun to part shade. Performs best in a sunny, sheltered position but tolerates wind, light frost, and coastal conditions once established.
Soil:
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Adaptable to a range of soil types but avoid heavy, poorly drained soils as excess moisture can cause root problems.
Uses:
- Rock gardens and borders
- Mass planting
- Low hedging and edging
- Coastal and native gardens
- Containers and small-space planting
Care Tips:
- Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage dense growth
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy foliage and flowering
- Water regularly during establishment and during prolonged dry periods once established
- Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the stem
- Hardy and adaptable, tolerating wind, light frost, and coastal conditions once established
