Largo Holly
Description:
A versatile evergreen holly with dense, dark green, oval-shaped foliage and an upright, bushy growth habit. Unlike traditional hollies, ‘Largo’ has smooth-edged leaves without the familiar spiny margins. Fresh spring growth emerges a brighter lime green before maturing to deep green. Developed in New Zealand, it is a hardy and adaptable plant that responds particularly well to trimming, making it an excellent choice for hedges, screening and topiary.

Position:
Full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages dense growth and good foliage colour. ‘Largo’ is tolerant of wind, frost and coastal conditions, although protection from direct salt spray is recommended.
Soil:
Fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It is adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils, provided drainage is reasonable. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Care Tips:
- Water regularly while establishing, particularly during dry periods.
- Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant.
- Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk or stems.
- Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage and growth.
- Trim once or twice a year to maintain a dense hedge or desired shape.
- It responds very well to pruning and can be maintained at a range of heights.
- Light formative pruning when young will encourage a full, well-branched structure.
- Ensure adequate drainage and avoid permanently waterlogged conditions.
- Allow additional space if growing as an untrimmed specimen.
