Leptospermum 'Nanum Kea'
Mānuka
Description:
Compact, evergreen New Zealand native shrub with small, fine foliage and a naturally dense, rounded growth habit. It produces attractive white flowers in spring and early summer, creating a fresh display against its dark green foliage. Its naturally tidy form and hardy nature make it well suited to borders, low hedging, mass planting, containers, and low-maintenance landscapes. Like other mānuka, it is well adapted to New Zealand conditions and is particularly useful in sunny, free-draining sites.
Height:
60–90cm
Width:
60–90cm
Position:
Full sun. Performs best in a sunny, open position with good airflow. Tolerates wind, coastal conditions, and periods of dry weather once established.
Soil:
Prefers free-draining soil and adapts well to a range of soil types, including lighter and sandy soils. Avoid heavy, poorly drained soils where excess moisture may lead to root problems.
Uses:
- Low hedges and borders
- Native gardens
- Mass planting and garden beds
- Coastal planting
- Containers and pots
- Low-maintenance landscapes
- Pollinator-friendly planting
Care Tips:
- Water regularly during establishment; once established, it is tolerant of dry conditions and requires additional watering mainly during prolonged dry periods
- Lightly prune after flowering to maintain its compact, rounded shape and encourage dense growth
- Remove spent flowers and any dead or damaged growth as required
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring if required to support healthy growth
- Mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the stem
- Ensure good drainage, particularly through winter
- Hardy and adaptable, tolerating wind, coastal exposure and light frost once established
