Magnolia 'Little Gem'
Description:
Compact, evergreen cultivar of Magnolia grandiflora, prized for its glossy, dark green leaves with rich bronze-brown felted undersides that provide year-round interest. Large, fragrant, creamy-white flowers appear from late spring through summer, with intermittent flowering often continuing into autumn in warmer parts of New Zealand. Its naturally upright, compact habit and moderate growth rate make it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, courtyards, screening, or as a striking feature tree.
Height:
3–5m
Width:
2–3m
Position:
Full sun to part shade. Performs best in a warm, sheltered position protected from strong winds, particularly while young.
Soil:
Prefers fertile, moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid prolonged waterlogging or heavily compacted soils. Mulch annually to help retain moisture and keep roots cool.
Uses:
- Feature or specimen tree
- Screening and privacy planting
- Courtyards and compact gardens
- Large containers or planters
- Mixed borders and avenue planting
Care Tips:
- Water regularly during establishment and during extended dry periods
- Apply mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk
- Feed with a balanced fertiliser or one formulated for acid-loving plants in spring
- Prune lightly after flowering to shape the tree and remove damaged or crossing branches
- Protect young plants from heavy frost in colder inland areas
- Hardy throughout most of New Zealand and performs particularly well in regions with mild winters
