Puka
Description:
A striking evergreen New Zealand native tree with a distinctive tropical appearance. Puka has large, glossy, leathery green leaves, which are clustered towards the ends of the branches and can reach up to 50 cm long. Small greenish flowers are produced in clusters, followed by fleshy fruit that ripens to dark purple or black. It develops a rounded crown as it matures and makes an impressive feature tree.

Position:
Full sun to partial shade. Puka is well suited to coastal conditions and tolerates strong winds and salt exposure. It is frost tender, particularly when young, so protection from heavy frosts is recommended.
Soil:
Deep, fertile, well-drained soil with reasonable moisture. Avoid prolonged dry conditions and poorly drained, waterlogged soils.

Care Tips:
- Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry periods.

- Light pruning can be used to encourage branching and maintain shape.
- Protect young plants from heavy frost and cold exposed sites.
- Avoid overwatering and ensure good drainage to reduce the risk of root problems.
- Allow plenty of room for the plant to develop its mature, rounded form.
