Description:
Compact evergreen New Zealand native tree with attractive glossy green foliage and a naturally tidy, bushy growth habit. In late spring and summer, it produces masses of vibrant pink-red brush-like flowers, which are rich in nectar and highly attractive to tūī, bellbirds, and other nectar-feeding birds. A smaller-growing form of pōhutukawa, it is ideal for gardens where space is limited while still providing the iconic flowering display and coastal character of this much-loved native tree.

Position:
Full sun. Performs best in a warm, open position with good airflow. Tolerates coastal exposure, wind, and salt spray.
Soil:
Prefers well-drained soil and adapts to sandy, coastal, and poorer soils. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly in heavy clay soils.

Care Tips:
- Water regularly while establishing; once established it is drought tolerant
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering
- Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage a dense, compact habit
- Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk
- Protect young plants from severe frost; established plants tolerate light frosts in suitable locations
- Hardy and well suited to coastal and warmer New Zealand gardens, including Auckland conditions
