Michelia ‘Bubbles’
Magnolia ‘Bubbles’
Description:
A beautiful evergreen New Zealand-bred tree with glossy green foliage, a naturally shapely form and highly fragrant flowers. Velvety brown buds develop through winter and spring before opening to reveal creamy-white flowers with a soft pink flush. The flowers are produced in abundance as the tree matures and have a gentle, sweet fragrance. ‘Bubbles’ is a versatile small to medium-sized tree that can be grown as a feature, clipped as a hedge or screen, or trained into a more formal shape.
Height:
4–5m
Width:
3m
Position:
Full sun to partial shade. A sheltered position is preferred, particularly when young. It is suitable for Auckland and other temperate parts of New Zealand and can tolerate light frost once established, with young plants benefiting from protection from heavier frosts and exposed conditions.
Soil:
Rich, fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It performs best in soil with good organic matter and reasonable moisture. Avoid prolonged waterlogging and very dry conditions.
Uses:
- Feature and specimen tree
- Screening
- Informal or formal hedging
- Pleaching and trained hedges
- Large containers when young
- Mixed shrub borders
- Small gardens
- Fragrant garden planting
- Poolside and courtyard planting
Care Tips:
- Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry periods.
- Mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and add organic matter, keeping mulch away from the trunk.
- Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
- Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and size.
- It responds well to clipping and can be maintained as a hedge or screen.
- Stake young plants until they are well established, particularly in exposed positions.
- Protect young plants from heavy frost and strong cold winds.
- Avoid permanently waterlogged soil and ensure good drainage.
- Allow sufficient room for the plant to develop its natural form if growing as a specimen tree.
