🌿 Key Growing Conditions (Read Me!):
Michelia figo can be finicky, but when planted in the right spot, it becomes a healthy, vigorous, and floriferous shrub. Here’s what it needs to thrive:
✅ Shelter is essential – it dislikes exposed, windy sites (especially cold or salt-laden winds). Choose a north-facing, protected spot out of harsh wind.
✅ Consistent moisture – prefers moist, well-drained soil that never dries out completely or becomes waterlogged. Mulch helps retain moisture.
✅ Warmth & humidity – it performs best in mild, humid climates like Auckland, particularly when protected from cold snaps.
✅ No root disturbance – avoid digging or compacting soil around its base once planted.
✅ Part shade to full sun – ideal light is morning sun and afternoon shade, especially in hotter areas.
Features:
- Rich banana-scented blooms in spring/summer
- Glossy, deep green evergreen foliage
- Dense, rounded habit — easy to shape
- Low maintenance when established
- Can be used as a specimen shrub, hedge, or understory plant
