Muehlenbeckia complexa
Wire Vine, Maidenhair Vine, Pohuehue
Description:
A vigorous, evergreen, twining native climber or groundcover with fine, wiry, dark stems and small round green leaves. It forms dense, tangled mats or can climb over supports. Tiny, greenish-white flowers appear in summer, followed by small white translucent berries. Attractive for its delicate texture and hardy nature, it’s often used for covering banks, walls, or as a filler plant in mixed plantings.
Height:
0.3 – 2 m (can climb higher if supported)
Width:
1 – 4 m spread
Position:
Full sun to part shade
Soil:
Prefers well-drained soil; tolerates sandy, loamy, or rocky soils
Uses:
· Groundcover for banks and slopes
· Climber on trellises, fences, or walls
· Coastal gardens (tolerates salt spray)
· Native and wildlife gardens
· Containers or hanging baskets (trailing habit)
· Erosion control on slopes
Care Tips:
· Keep moist while establishing, then only occasional watering needed
· Trim regularly to control spread or shape — it can become invasive if not managed
· Apply a slow-release native or general fertiliser in spring
· Mulch around base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds
· Generally pest-free and disease-resistant
· Can handle coastal winds and poor soils; prune hard annually if it becomes woody or straggly
