Ophiopogon japonicus ‘Nana’
Dwarf Mondo Grass
Description:
Compact, slow-growing evergreen groundcover with fine, grass-like deep green foliage. It forms dense, tufted clumps that resemble miniature lawn grass. In summer, it produces small, pale lilac to white flowers close to the foliage, followed by glossy blue-black berries. Being dwarf, it is smaller and tidier than the standard mondo grass, making it ideal for edging and decorative plantings.
Height:
7–10 cm
Width:
15–20 cm, slowly spreading by underground rhizomes
Position:
Full sun to part shade; tolerates deep shade but grows more slowly
Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained soil; tolerates clay and sandy soils once established
Uses:
· Excellent groundcover for borders and pathways
· Lawn substitute in low-traffic areas
· Rock gardens and between stepping stones
· Underplanting around trees and shrubs
· Container planting for texture contrast
Care Tips:
· Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but looks best with occasional deep watering
· Apply a slow-release general fertiliser in spring for lush growth
· Very low-maintenance; trim or shear back clumps every few years if they become untidy
· Generally pest- and disease-free in NZ
· Hardy to frost; tolerates hot summers and cool winters
