Mountain Flax / Wharariki
Description:
Native flax known for its graceful, arching leaves and hardy nature. Compared to the larger Phormium tenax (Harakeke), it has softer, narrower, and more drooping foliage, giving it a more refined look in gardens. In summer, it produces tall flower stalks with greenish-yellow to red flowers that attract native birds, particularly tūī and bellbirds.

Full sun to part shade, tolerates wind and coastal exposure, ideal for slopes, borders, or water margins
Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Adapts to a range of conditions, including poor or sandy soils, tolerates periodic wetness

· Erosion control on banks and slopes
· Mass planting or as a specimen plant
· Wildlife attraction (nectar for native birds)
· Excellent in wetland planting schemes
· Container planting in large pots
Care Tips:
· Water well until established, especially during dry spells
· Trim dead leaves to maintain appearance
· Divide clumps every few years to rejuvenate growth
· Tolerates salt-laden winds and light frosts common in Auckland
· Mulch in summer to conserve moisture
· Avoid waterlogged conditions for long periods
