Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Reflections'
Description:
Compact, evergreen New Zealand native shrub with dense, rounded growth and attractive variegated foliage. The small, glossy leaves are soft green with creamy-white margins, providing year-round colour and contrast in the garden. Its naturally tidy habit makes it an excellent choice for low hedges, borders, feature planting, and containers. In spring, mature plants may produce small, dark purple, honey-scented flowers, although these are often hidden within the foliage.
Height:
2–3m
Width:
1.5–2m
Position:
Full sun to part shade. Grows best in a sunny position but tolerates light shade. Hardy in coastal and exposed locations once established.
Soil:
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil but adapts to a wide range of soil types, including sandy and clay soils, provided drainage is good.
Uses:
- Low hedging and screening
- Feature or specimen shrub
- Mixed shrub borders
- Coastal and native gardens
- Containers and courtyard planting
- Low-maintenance landscapes
Care Tips:
- Water regularly while establishing; once established it tolerates short dry periods
- Lightly trim once or twice a year to maintain a dense, compact shape
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy foliage
- Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk
- Hardy and well suited to New Zealand conditions, tolerating wind, coastal exposure, and light frost once established
- Avoid prolonged waterlogging to maintain healthy root growth
