Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Wrinkle Blue'
Description:
Distinctive, evergreen New Zealand native shrub with dense, compact growth and unique blue-grey foliage that has a slightly crinkled or "wrinkled" appearance. The attractive foliage provides year-round colour and texture, making it an excellent contrast plant in modern, native, or coastal landscapes. In spring, mature plants may produce small, dark purple, honey-scented flowers nestled among the foliage.
Height:
2–3m
Width:
1.5–2m
Position:
Full sun to part shade. Best foliage colour develops in full sun. Tolerates wind, coastal exposure, and light frost once established.
Soil:
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil but adapts to a wide range of soil types, including sandy and clay soils, provided drainage is good. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
Uses:
- Screening and informal hedging
- Feature or specimen shrub
- Mixed shrub borders
- Coastal and native gardens
- Contemporary landscapes
- Low-maintenance planting
Care Tips:
- Water regularly during establishment; once established it tolerates dry periods
- Trim lightly once or twice a year to maintain a dense, tidy shape
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth
- Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk
- Hardy and well suited to New Zealand conditions, tolerating wind, coastal exposure, and light frost
- Avoid prolonged waterlogging to promote healthy root development
