Rhopalostylis sapida
Nīkau Palm
Description:
Iconic New Zealand native palm and the only palm species native to mainland New Zealand. Nīkau forms a slender, ringed trunk topped with a graceful crown of long, dark green fronds, creating a distinctive tropical appearance while remaining well suited to native and subtropical planting schemes. It is slow growing and evergreen, with pinkish flowers produced beneath the crown followed by attractive red berries that provide food for birds. With its elegant upright form and strong architectural character, Nīkau makes an excellent specimen or feature palm for sheltered gardens and larger landscapes.
Height:
10–15m at maturity
Width:
2–3m
Position:
Part shade to full sun. Prefers a sheltered position, particularly when young, with protection from strong winds and heavy frost. Established palms can tolerate more sun and coastal conditions, provided adequate moisture is available.
Soil:
Prefers deep, moist, fertile and well-drained soil with good organic matter. It can tolerate a range of soils but performs best where the soil remains reasonably moist without becoming waterlogged.
Uses:
- Feature and specimen planting
- Native gardens
- Coastal gardens
- Subtropical planting
- Mass planting in larger landscapes
- Woodland and sheltered gardens
- Bird-friendly planting
Care Tips:
- Water regularly during establishment to encourage strong root development and healthy growth
- Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during hot and dry periods
- Mulch around the root zone to help retain moisture and improve soil conditions, keeping mulch away from the trunk
- Protect young plants from heavy frost and strong winds
- Remove only dead or damaged fronds as required; avoid unnecessary pruning of healthy foliage
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring if required to support healthy growth
- Allow plenty of space for the mature crown to develop
- Slow growing, so avoid planting where rapid screening or instant height is required
