Alectryon excelsus
Description:
Alectryon excelsus (Titoki) is an attractive evergreen tree native to New Zealand, valued for its glossy dark green foliage, rounded canopy, and ornamental fruit. In late spring to early summer it produces small greenish-white flowers, followed by distinctive woody capsules that split open in autumn to reveal shiny black seeds surrounded by bright red fleshy arils.

Prefers fertile, well-drained soils but adapts to a wide range of soil types, including clay and sandy loams.

Care Tips:

Water regularly during the first 1–2 years while establishing, particularly through dry periods
- Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk
- Feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring if required
- Prune lightly to shape when young or remove damaged or crossing branches as needed
- Generally hardy and low maintenance once established, with good resistance to most pests and diseases
