Zephyranthes candida
Rain Lily
Description:
Small, bulbous perennial that produces delicate, pure white, funnel-shaped flowers resembling tiny lilies. It typically blooms after rain, often in late summer to autumn. Its grass-like foliage remains green throughout the growing season, forming clumps that can naturalize in garden beds or containers. It’s low-maintenance and adds a soft, elegant touch to borders, rock gardens, or as a groundcover.
Height:
15–30 cm
Width:
10–20 cm (clumping habit)
Position:
Full sun to partial shade, flowers more prolifically in full sun
Soil:
Well-draining soil is essential, prefers sandy or loamy soils. Can tolerate slightly acidic to neutral pH
Uses:
· Borders, edging, rock gardens
· Containers and pots
· Naturalising under trees or in garden beds
· Seasonal interest with rain-triggered blooms
Care Tips:
· Water during dry periods but avoid waterlogging. Bulbs can rot in poorly drained soils
· Light fertiliser in spring and summer promotes growth; a bulb fertiliser works well
· Remove spent flowers to encourage tidier clumps and prevent seed dispersal if undesired.
· Mulch lightly in cooler areas to protect bulbs from occasional frost
· By dividing bulbs after flowering or from seeds; bulbs will gradually form larger clumps
· Generally pest-free, but watch for slugs/snails in damp conditions
