Dwarf Mondo Grass
Description:
Compact, slow-growing evergreen groundcover with fine, grass-like deep green foliage. It forms dense, tidy clumps that resemble miniature lawn grass. In summer, it produces small pale lilac to white flowers tucked amongst the foliage, which may be followed by attractive blue-black berries. Smaller and more refined than standard mondo grass, this dwarf form is ideal for edging, detail planting, and adding texture to garden spaces.

15–20 cm, slowly spreading by underground rhizomes
Position:
Full sun to part shade. Tolerates deeper shade but growth is slower and clumps may be less dense. In sunnier positions, consistent moisture will help maintain lush foliage.
Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils, provided drainage is adequate. Avoid prolonged waterlogged conditions.

- Excellent groundcover for borders and pathways
- Edging along garden beds and driveways
- Rock gardens and between stepping stones
- Underplanting around trees and shrubs
- Shady gardens and woodland planting
- Container planting for texture contrast
- Mass planting for a low, uniform groundcover effect
Care Tips:
- Keep well-watered during establishment. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods but performs best with some moisture during prolonged dry weather
- Apply a slow-release general fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth
- Very low maintenance; remove damaged leaves or trim back clumps in late winter if required to refresh growth
- Generally pest and disease resistant in New Zealand
- Hardy throughout most of New Zealand, tolerating frost and cooler winter conditions once established
