Description:
Hardy, upright, rush-like native plant with slender, jointed, grey-green stems and fine texture. It naturally forms dense clumps that create a striking architectural look. The stems are segmented and slightly wiry, often tinged with bronze or orange at the tips in cooler weather. It is a dominant species in coastal and wetland areas of New Zealand, well adapted to salty winds and damp soils, making it a valuable choice for both ornamental and ecological planting.

Position:
Full sun to light shade. Thrives in exposed, coastal, and windy sites.
Soil:
Prefers moist to wet soils, sandy loams, or peaty ground. Tolerates coastal sands, saline conditions, and poor soils.
Uses:
· Coastal and wetland restoration projects
· Mass planting for texture and movement in landscaping
· Erosion control on banks and coastal areas
· Great for modern native gardens and as a contrast plant
· Can be used around ponds and water features
Care tips:
· Very low-maintenance once established
· Water regularly during establishment; tolerates wet or dry once settled
· No fertiliser usually required, but can benefit from light native plant fertiliser
in poor soils
· Cut back old stems every few years to rejuvenate the clump
· Tolerates salt spray and wind, making it excellent for coastal gardens
