Buxus 'Green Gem'
Description:
A compact, slow-growing evergreen shrub with small, glossy dark green leaves and a naturally rounded growth habit. Buxus 'Green Gem' is valued for its dense foliage, excellent shape retention and ability to be clipped into formal shapes or left to grow naturally. It is a popular choice for low hedging, borders and structured garden designs.
Height:
0.8-1m
Width:
0.8-1m
Position:
Prefers full sun to partial shade. It will grow well in a range of conditions but performs best with good light and protection from harsh drying winds.
Soil:
Requires a well-drained soil. Prefers fertile soils but is adaptable and will tolerate a range of soil types if drainage is adequate.
Uses:
- Formal low hedging and edging
- Garden borders and structured planting schemes
- Topiary and clipped shapes
- Pots and containers
- Foundation planting around homes and buildings
- Low-maintenance evergreen garden features
Care Tips:
- Prune in late spring or summer to maintain a neat, dense shape and encourage bushier growth
- Avoid heavy pruning into old wood as regrowth can be slower
- Apply a layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds
- Water regularly while establishing, especially during dry periods
- Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth
- Generally hardy in New Zealand conditions, but good airflow and drainage will help reduce the risk of fungal issues
